Meaning: "The Place of the Palms," inspired by Malelane, South Africa.

Malelani is more than a café—it's a place where great food, community, and creativity come together. Blending the relaxed atmosphere of a European-style café with Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and a name inspired by South Africa, Malelani celebrates the connection between cultures, flavors, and people.
The story began in 2010, when founder George Drakopoulos opened the original Malelani Café in Atlantic City. Born and raised in South Africa, George was inspired by the natural beauty of Kruger National Park and the spirit of Malelane, known as "The Place of the Palms." With his Greek heritage and South African upbringing shaping his vision, George set out to create a space that combined the vibrant colors and bold flavors of Mediterranean cuisine with the cosmopolitan café culture of Johannesburg.
Following the success of the Atlantic City location, George set out to establish a year-round home for Malelani in a neighborhood that valued culture, community, and artistic expression. In 2014, he brought that vision to Philadelphia's beautiful and diverse Mount Airy neighborhood. Since then, Malelani has grown into a beloved gathering place where guests come not only to enjoy delicious food, but also to exchange ideas, discover local talent, and connect with the creative spirit that makes Mount Airy so special. As George likes to say, "I didn't choose Mt. Airy; Mt. Airy chose me."
Music played a meaningful role in the next chapter of Malelani's story. Through the café's open mic nights and a shared love of music, George met Dexter Myers, who would eventually become his business partner. After graduating from Georgia Tech with an engineering degree, Dexter moved to the Mount Airy area in 2016. Through his connection with George and the Malelani community, he developed a deep appreciation for food, music, and the role a neighborhood café can play in bringing people together.
Recognizing Dexter's passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence, George welcomed him as a partner. Today, they continue to build on Malelani's original vision, creating a warm and welcoming space where exceptional food, meaningful connections, and creative expression thrive.

Malelani is expanding. We have a variety of opportunities for outreach in the nonprofit sector and additional restaurant locations. You will notice some exciting and positive changes. We will be undergoing some light remodeling, minor menu upgrades, web design improvements, enhanced delivery hours, and welcoming new programming and events. Our commitment to quality will stay the same, and our employees are happy to continue serving you the delicious food we are known for.
